Standard Test Method for Vicat Softening Temperature and Heating Defortion Temperation of Plastics is designed to fit the rapid development of plastic industry and improve the level of material research and test. They adopt the newest international and national standards: ISO 75-1-1993 Plastics; determination of temperature of deflection under load, ISO306:1994 Plastics - Thermoplastic materials - Determination of Vicat softening temperature (VST), GB/T1633—2000 Thermoplastic materials - Determination of Vicat softening temperature (VST), and GB/T1634—2001 Plastics; determination of temperature of deflection under load. Controlled by computer, they are of stable performance, easy operation and high automation degree, which makes them the most advanced test instruments to measure deflection and Vicat softening temperature of non-metallic materials.
Test method:
A flat-ended needle loaded with a specified mass is placed in direct contact with a test specimen.
The mass applied can be one of two accepted loads, as follows:
Loading 1—10 ± 0.2 N
Loading 2—50 ± 1.0 N
The specimen and needle are heated at either of two permis-sible rates, as follows:
Rate A—50 ± 5°C/h
Rate B—120 ± 10°C/h
The temperature at which the needle has penetrated to a depth of 1 6 0.01 mm is recorded as the Vicat softening temperature.
